Dr. Sasanka Kumar Barua is one of the foremost urologists and transplant surgeons in Northeast India, with a distinguished career spanning over two decades in academic medicine, surgical innovation, and healthcare leadership. Currently serving as Professor and Head of Urology & Renal Transplantation at Gauhati Medical College, Dr. Barua is also the Administrative Head of the Superspeciality Hospital and the Chairman of the Solid Organ Transplant Committee, where he has pioneered several landmark surgical milestones.

Notably, Dr. Barua led Assam’s first ABO-incompatible renal transplant and successfully conducted the state’s first deceased donor kidney transplant on 13th December 2023 at Gauhati Medical College Hospital—setting a precedent in the region’s transplant capabilities.

A highly respected academician and researcher, Dr. Barua has contributed significantly to scientific literature with numerous publications in reputed national and international journals. His areas of interest include uro-oncology, transplant immunology, advanced renal imaging, and minimally invasive urological surgeries.

He has presented over 40 scientific papers at prestigious urological conferences across India and served as faculty at various national and regional workshops, CMEs, and academic forums. As Honorary President of the Assam Urological , Dr. Barua has played a key role in promoting urological education and collaboration across the region. He is an active member of American Urological Association, European Association of Urology and Indian Society of Organ Transplant.

Dr. Barua is also on the editorial and peer-review boards of several renowned journals, including BMC Cancer, Frontiers in Oncology, and the Indian Journal of Surgery, further reflecting his deep engagement with ongoing advancements in urological science and clinical practice.
